Forefoot Pain (Metatarsalgia)
What is Metatarsalgia?
- Metatarsalgia is pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot, metatarsal region, which is just before the toes. It is a common problem, which can affect the bones and joints of the metatarsals. The severity of the pain can vary and may affect just one or two toes. Sometimes, the whole foot or even both feet might be affected. It can be associated with painful calluses under the areas.
Causes
- Metatarsalgia is generally caused by excessive pressure on one or more of the metatarsal bones. It can be a result of misalignment of bones or a biomechanical problem such as over-pronation.
Symptoms
- Pain in the ball of the foot, metatarsal region, which is just before the toes
- Pain that increases when walking in bare feet
- Callus in the area of increased pressure and pain
Treatment
- Metatarsal pad or increased cushion to the forefoot can reduce the pressure and alleviate pain. To control the excessive pronation, custom orthotics with motion control shoes will help.
